Abstract
In today’s globalized world, the number of international students is steadily rising as more individuals opt to study abroad. Hosting these students significantly contributes to the internationalization and growth of educational institutions. As their numbers grow, universities must not only attract new international students but also provide effective support to help them adapt to unfamiliar academic and social environments.
This study focuses on two main aspects: first, it examines the strategies adopted by the Foreign Office to address linguistic and academic adjustment issues faced by international students; second, it explores the specific linguistic and academic challenges encountered by international students at Universitas KH. Abdul Chalim.
This study utilized a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving foreign office members, international students, and lecturers.
The results of the study show that: first, the foreign office provides Language Program and Cultural Orientation, Administrative Support, and Academic Coordination with the lecturers to help international students with their adjustment. Second, during their initial adjustment, international students experienced linguistic and academic challenges, including difficulty understanding the language of instruction, Academic Vocabulary and Grammar Difficulties, Understanding Lecture Materials, Academic Writing and presentation, communication anxiety, and lack of confidence that affect classroom participation. Despite these challenges, students' improvement is gradually influenced by the foreign office support, teachers' guidance, peer interaction, active participation in campus activities, and students' personal efforts to adjust. Therefore, the importance of comprehensive institutional support helps enhance international students' adjustment and overall university experience.
