Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the method of Jamâl al-Bannâ’s interpretation. Begining with an
attempt to deconstruct the interpretation of the results of all classical scholar, Jamâl al-Bannâ proposed
three stages in the interpretation of the Qur’ân, such as art approaches, psychological approaches,
and rationalism. All three will be the stage hierarchically in order to come to an interpretation. In the
rationalization stage interpretation of the Qur’ân, Jamâl al-Bannâ didn’t recommend a specific method
or limit the science or a particular method. He refused if one particular method has the warranty
as the only way to find the truth, because the Qur’ân should not be restricted. In the sociology of
knowledge, his thinking is similar to the Paul K. Feyerabend’s Against Method. For Jamal, humans are
very autonomous and free to interpret as long as it is in line with the universal principles contained in
the Qur’ân.
